...there is a photo set by Rob Pivarnik, all rights reserved, here on flickr of the last day of NYRenFaire 2012:

and the leather outfit on the rather-cute gentleman is really eye-catching...does anyone know who made it? The man looks like a performer of some sort, so I am guessing people may be familiar with him and his group, and that may lead to finding out where he gets his great gear! Thanks...I will fish around, but I was really struck by the several photos of his outfit on that stream...

This weekend I'm going up to Northern California Renaissance Faire with my parents.

I'm excited, because it is a wonderful show overall. Sometimes to me it feels like a shadow of the faires of my childhood, but I do like the faire, and I like Casa de Fruta where it is held, and all that.

So, I was wondering what everyone else has been up to. Any events, anything interesting, character research, things you saw that reminded you of faire? It's been too long since there's been a post here, and all that. I might also post again this weekend (though that'll be from my phone) while I am up there.

The other neat thing, though it's slightly off topic as far as faire itself. I'm driving up with my parents, and this is the first year that I've actually had my driver's license and such, and they have said that they're going to let me drive some of the way. To be quite honest I am not sure if this is a good thing, a bad thing, or something somewhere in between, but it should be good. Interesting and different trip if I'm doing some driving.

Oh yeah and I'm going to be taking lots and lots of pictures while I am up there. So when I get home and get them up on the internet I'll share those with everyone as well!

Sad news.

It seems too often that my excuse to post here is that I bear saddening news.

This morning, I learned that John Schulps, the knifemaker and ceramic artist who has for so long been a pillar of the Southern and Northern California faires, has passed away from terminal cancer.

Somewhere, if there is a peaceful realms, it is a safer and calmer place now. And he will be missed.

Edit: An obituary has been posted.

I have postcards!

These postcards are good for ten dollars off of the gate price of admission to the Southern California Renaissance Pleasure Faire, which opens to the general public next weekend (not tomorrow).

Unfortunately I can't just leave these at will call for people. However, they'll mailable. Comment with your address to this entry (comments are of course screened) and the number of postcards you would like, and I'll get them sent out as soon as I can.

Thank you!

Greetings!

Hello, new people! [profile] edgeraven and I are both SoCal folks, so our closest local Faire is the Southern California Renaissance Pleasure Faire.

I keep meaning to haul myself up to the Ojai Pirate Faire but it always seems to coincide with a really busy time for me at work, and I end up missing it. Perhaps this year I'll finally be able to attend!

Where do you all hail from? What are your local Faires and festivals?

This weekend has seen the start of the participant season for Southern California Renaissance Pleasure Faire!

I was at both stakeout on Friday and the beginning of things for everyone else on Saturday, and it was pretty much uneventful as far as participant land goes.  I'm excited as usual, though, and this next month sees me hectically trying to get garb together, hoping that we can put up the booth in time, and wondering if I'll be able to keep good on my word that I'm not going to be doing stage shows this year.  My knees really, really hope that I can keep good on that.

For those with an interest in participating this year, I point you to the Faire's official site for participants.  They are in the process of revamping the website and that is therefore subject to change.  If I forget to put the new link up, someone should poke me at some point.

There were also two very interesting things/changes this year.  No styrofoam on faire site, and no smoking on faire site.  Both of those were courtesy of that the faire is on a Los Angeles County park.  There will apparently be dragon's circles through the faire for those who wish to smoke, though I don't know very much more about that yet.

But here we go once again, another season and another year.

The breeze at dawn has secrets to tell you.
Don't go back to sleep.

You must ask for what you really want.
Don't go back to sleep.

People are going back and forth across the doorsill
where the two worlds touch.

The door is round and open.
Don't go back to sleep.

Bissalama, Don Brown, ma'assalama.

Today, at 10:55 a.m., Don Brown, the beloved Mullah of the Teahouse of the Mullah Nasrudin's Donkey, the coffeehouse at Agoura Southern Ren Faire, Lark in the Morning, and Sweetsmill, passed away peacefully in his sleep. You can find the actual updates on the Teahouse site here.

Insha'allah, Don is in a better place now.

Don Brown was a wonderful man, a constant presence in my memories of childhood. I won't say that I knew Don well, at least not during the last ten years of my life, but he was a friend of the family and a good friend of both of my parents. I got the news of Don's passing this morning, as my father had been on the phone with Kristi and trying to book a flight up to Oakland, as we were going to be visiting. I will be sad always that I didn't make it up to visit him before the end.
